Johnny Pohe and the Escape from Stalag Luft III

Johnny Pohe, a brave Maori pilot, longed for an adventure and a strong sense of duty when he joined the air forces during World War II. However, his fate took a dark turn when he was captured and held captive at Stalag Luft III, a German prisoner-of-war camp designed specifically for high-ranking officers. Despite the tough circumstances, Johnny remained patience and determined to escape. The camp had three potential escape routes, each named Dick, Tom, and Harry. However, the escape attempt did not go according to plan, and the tunnels collapsed, leading to the capture of 73 men who faced a brutal future. Despite the odds, Johnny was one of the lucky few who managed to escape back to England, along with only two other brave soldiers. The construction of the escape routes alone was a tiring , requiring the work of 600 men over a year’s worth of time. The story of Johnny Pohe and the daring escape attempts from Stalag Luft III remains a legend to this day
